Treatments
Post-Cosmetic Surgery / Liposuction
All cosmetic surgeries produce swelling to some extent, since this is part of the body’s normal healing process. Certain procedures, such as liposuction and abdominoplasty, can interfere with the lymphatic pathways increasing the risk of not only swelling, but bruising, adhesions, and hardening of the tissues (fibrosis).
Our clinically trained Vodder MLD Therapists have the skills to help optimise the results of your surgery and reduce the recovery time. We can also assist you with your compression and advise you should you need further garments.
Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD)
MLD is recommended by most surgeons as soon as possible after surgery. It has been shown to reduce bruising and swelling, relieve pain and discomfort and minimise scarring. MLD can also help to prevent infection by removing stagnant lymph fluid from the area, enabling the patient to move more freely and support the healing process.
Deep Oscillation Therapy (DOT)
This specialist electrostatic therapy is used together with MLD to optimise your treatment plan and recovery. It is a gentle and non-invasive treatment which can be applied without pain or discomfort from 24 hours following surgery. It helps to accelerate wound healing, permeating all the layers of the skin, reducing and softening scar tissue. DOT is clinically proven to reduce pain and has an anti-inflammatory action. The rhythmic, electrostatic impulses result in deep relaxation which, together with the pain-relieving effect, help the body to completely relax.
How many MLD treatments should I have?
Ideally patients should have one MLD treatment 24-48 hours prior to surgery. This helps to prepare the tissue for surgery by cleansing it and reducing the risk of infection.
The number of treatments post-surgery will depend on the procedure and the surgeons’ recommendation. Generally, most patients have 8-10 treatments within 6 weeks of surgery.
If you have multiple procedures in one surgery (eg tummy tuck, liposuction and breast lift) then a course of MLD treatments will be even more important to help reduce swelling and avoid fibrosis.
